When you record sound, make sure you're not so loud it distorts...maybe have a few test records if you don't have a display. It doesn't matter how quiet you record normally, 'cause you can normalize it (turn it up to max possible volume) later, but if you record a distorted sound you can't do anything about it - unless you want it distorted, which I don't think you did.

err... thanks for the (useless) tips.
but the distortion is nothing to do with the volume. they sounded fine before I compressed them. hell, would you want to wait 3x as long for the movie to load just for the sake of high quality sound?
